Track of the Day: Liz Nash – Boo Boo Betty (2024)
While her interest in music was stoked by the folk guitar player at the local library who she thought was the coolest, singer-songwriter Liz Nash’s flaming passion for music was already smouldering – whether she knew it or not. As a child, the New York native (who now lives in Florida) would become mesmerised by poetic songwriting transporting her to another world; hence, it made sense she would study music. Exploring the realm of Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel albums with her brother, Nash began performing in New York and even shared the stage with The Motels, David Bromberg and The Gin Blossoms. Her debut album Late Nite Menu caught the attention of international audiences, and her engaging gigs spanned from Shanghai and Beijing to the USA. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Boo Boo Betty’.
Following her well-received single ‘Change The World’, Liz Nash takes another step into 2024 with the track ‘Boo Boo Betty’. Using her music as a catharsis, Nash finds solace in her melodies removing the struggles and strife of reality. In ‘Boo Boo Betty’, she explores the intricate interplay of mental health and everyday life. Have you ever been told to just “deal with it” and “shake things off”; well, ‘Boo Boo Betty’ divulges how depression persists even if it doesn’t seem apparent to the onlooker. Nash explains:
“’Boo Boo Betty’ is a fictitious character that goes through her daily activities while suffering from severe depression. I wanted this song to be catchy, relatable and haunting.”
Shifting from tender indie folk in ‘Change The World’, ‘Boo Boo Betty’ is a dark, blues-filled bubble of Americana. Recorded and produced by John Marsden and Jeff King, the new single is an immersive experience of existing without living. Tossed into a dark mire of despair, Jeff King’s blues guitar matches his bold drums hitting you in the chest to leave you gasping for breath, yet the melodic harmony also wraps you in a soothing velvety blanket.
The instrumentation is soul-stirring, but Nash’s vocals bind things together. As if dictating her life, Nash gives a rolling commentary on Boo Boo Betty’s day but, simultaneously, peers out of the character’s eyes expressing turmoil, frustration and desperation. Sincere and introspective but chilling in a subdued way, ‘Boo Boo Betty’ picks at human fragility with symphonic mastery.
