The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Lazywall – Kan Hez Yeddi (2023)

Formed in England by brothers Nao, Monz and Youssef, Lazywall has an aim to create something entirely unique with an intensity that transcends cultures. Drawing their Moroccan heritage into their music, one of the unique elements is the tinge of traditional Arabic tones from the melodies to the language; it is this slant that has people speaking about their passionate sound. While this is my introduction to Lazywall, the lads have already performed at various European festivals, were the first band to perform on Moroccan TV and reach audiences internationally through online and radio coverage. Come with us as we delve into their single ‘Kan Hez Yeddi’.

Unafraid to explore provocative topics, Lazywall touch on issues like social injustice, climate change, corruption and integration with a power that truly transcends language barriers and cultures. When speaking about the use of Arabic in their singles, Lazywall explained that “we don’t talk about politics because we don’t care. We don’t talk about religion because it’s a personal thing, but singing about that underage girl who was forced to marry her rapist is tough in any language…” Of course, a song needs more than profound lyricism to hit you between the eyes and Lazywall is just as bold in their melodies as they are with the lyrical content.

Described by A&R Factory as a band to “…give Rise Against and Shinedown a run for their money”, Moroccan trio Lazywall packs a powerful punch with their rock/metal hybrid. In ‘Kan Hez Yeddi’, there is a blast of hard rock meeting the brashness of metal but with a soothing quality. Tossing you into a sonic whirlpool, Lazywall spins you about with the kaleidoscopic arrangement. The thing is despite being in a whirlpool the single is warm and charming embracing you in a tender hug. Instead of pounding drums clashing with the dynamic guitars, they fuse to form a heartfelt rock song as the rich vocals traipse along the melody.

One of the more intriguing and distinguishing aspects of Lazywall is not the Arabic language but the lick of Moroccan traditional sounds flowing through at the end of the track. It adds an eclecticism to ‘Kan Hez Yeddi’ breathing a fresh obscurity to their music. It fuses contemporary alternative rock with roots music to “connect the oud with the rock guitar, establishing a new musical trade route from the Orient to the Occident”.

So, what is my overall opinion of Lazywall and ‘Kan Hez Yeddi’? Jaw-dropping and spine-chilling, Lazywall rattle around your cranium and leaves you gasping for breath with their new single.
