Track of the Day: Kultures – Living In The Same House

The brainchild of Ohio-based multi-instrumentalist Justin Miller, Kultures is filled to the brink with passionate creativity. Exploring concepts of self-actualisation, self-expression and self-doubt, the singer-songwriter engages with audiences on a deeper level. While this solo project was only founded last year, Miller has featured on several blogs and playlists like Indie Music Center, Beyond The Stage Magazine and Find A Song Blog. One of the most recent additions to his growing repertoire is ‘Living In The Same House’.

I could say that ‘Living In The Same House’ shows a reminiscence to Oasis or REM, but I won’t do that. Truth be told, any comparison to another band would not be good enough. Having performed with artists like The Used, Motion City Soundtrack, Moon City and Tall Heights, one can certainly hear how these experiences have influenced his solo sound. Sophisticated and mature, but retaining a wistful innocence is the best way to describe this evocative single.

Written and recorded in his home studio, ‘Living In The Same House’ has a rawness in both sound and lyricism. A conceptual song, sort of, the track explores “the complex experience of realising you care about someone enough to genuinely want to spend every day together”. The intensity of this emotion is effortlessly represented by the sentimentality and tenderness of the melody. A harmonic union exists between piano, guitars and drums resulting in a song that is not only soul-stirring but sends shivers down your spine.

The interspersed piano-playing is potentially my favourite element of ‘Living In The Same House’. It has an acoustic-inspired feel to it and adds a dollop of sensitivity amidst the swirl of guitars and drums. Moreover, Kultures rich vocals add a heartfelt tone. It is as if he is pouring every last inch of himself into this sincere single.

In addition to his single, Kultures released an official music video for ‘Living In The Same House’. It can be seen here.
