Track of the Day: Kreajours – Hyacinth (2024)

If you’ve not heard of Kreajours just yet, then you are not alone. With their 2024 single ‘Hyacinth’, The Other Side Reviews has our heads turned by the US-based quintet; however, we seem to be late to the party with various international curators already intoxicated by the group. From France to Germany, Brazil, the UK and their native USA, frontman Campfire shares that “Kreajours is not just making music; we’re kicking down the doors of conventionality.”

Drawing together the natural talents of long-time friends, Campfire (vocals and guitar), Z (guitar) London Boy (vocals, guitar and bass), Parenthesis (vocals, guitar and bass) and Seany Soundscapes (synths) fuse their passion for music, maths and science to captivate audiences with a blast of sound tipped between hazy chaos and intense precision. Following a year of constant releases, 23 tracks to be exact, ‘Hyacinth’ is the second release in 2024.

Following ‘False Promises’, Kreajours tap into an inner Radiohead with slivers of Jack White fluttering through in ‘Hyacinth’. Slightly hazier and filled with a kaleidoscopic sonic fog, Kreajours shove you into a sonic hurricane tossed from pillar to post. Dynamic guitars match pounding drums and piercing synths presenting a hard-hitting indie-rock feel. Yet, despite the strong rock flavour, Campfire’s lead vocals slip into psychedelic grunge enhancing the obscurity of ‘Hyacinth’.

From its classic rock shimmers to the intoxicating flurry of wistful grunge, one easily becomes lost in the ethereal fog. While ‘Hyacinth’ has chaotic fury, a powerful guitar leads you to the eye of the storm allowing you to catch your breath…. but only for a second. As soon as you feel a sense of calm, Kreajours grabs you once again into a distorted sound.

Just as the melody is confusing and melodic madness, intricate precision marks complexity in the arrangement prompting a sense of organised chaos. What I find even more intriguing is how this ebb and flow of sound perfectly aligns with the profound narrative. Kreajours explain:

“’Hyacinth’ is a new track about a fictional unrequited love between a young man and a prostitute. While the lyrics are entirely radio-friendly, the messaging behind the song explores confusion and despair in the eyes of a hopeless romantic.”
