Track of the Day: Kevin Walsh – Ruby (2024)

If you aren’t aware of who Kevin Walsh is, then you’ve been missing out… until now. Raised in Ireland, the Irish singer-songwriter began life as a “non-verbal autistic child” who overcame challenges through music. His first single ‘Embrace The World’ reached #1 on the Irish iTunes Singles, and his cover of Meat Loaf’s ‘Not A Dry Eye In The House’ continued the “chart-topping streak finishing out 2022 with a show-stopping performance at the Cork Opera House…” A shining beacon representing the power of music, Kevin Walsh sets the tone for others to follow.

When speaking about his approaches to singing, Kevin Walsh notes that he tends to have “…two approaches when singing; loud and louder.” Well, personally, I’m perfectly happy with that and his past two rock singles. Yet, there is a softer side to Walsh; a more sensitive, subtle and subdued side to his voice, and he brings this to life in his latest single ‘Ruby’. With a desire to create a full musical movie depicting two lovers who are separated from one pursuing fame and fortune, Walsh began his tale with ‘Not A Dry Eye In The House’; ‘Ruby’ continues the story. Walsh explains:

“This song is part of an EP I plan to release next year. The music video for ‘Not A Dry Eye’ was the pilot for that story and this song carries it forward. The whole EP centres around that relationship…”

A kaleidoscopic concoction of sound and emotion, ‘Ruby’ grabs at your heart immediately with the tender tones of Dylan Howe’s piano, quickly caught with Maria Ryan’s poignant strings. Finding a beautiful blend of Walsh’s silvery classical vocals, backed by Sarah Hickey’s backing vocals, ‘Ruby’ is the breath-taking, heart-stopping moment of “no, but you’re perfect for each other” in a romantic drama.

Sprinkling his magic dust on the melody, producer Kealan Kenny adds a sophisticated, elegant charm to the overall tune, but Walsh’s seamless binding of and immersion in the song enhances its rawness, vulnerability and delicate fragility. Based on ‘Ruby’ alone, I cannot wait for the next instalment in Walsh’s intriguing love story.

In addition to the single, Kevin Walsh released an official lyrics video for ‘Ruby’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
