Track of the Day: KAYPAIGE – Higher Than
Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, KAYPAIGE is a singer-songwriter melding together pop, indie and RnB to form a unique sound. Originally told to pursue a single career in the music industry, this young African-American said “forget that!” and is breaking all boundaries with her distinctive style…okay, maybe she didn’t say “forget that”, but let’s just say she did to really emphasise her bravery. Working with several talented artists and producers, KAYPAIGE is exploring all options at her disposal to blossom into the stunning songstress we know she is. ‘Higher Than’ is her debut single as KAYPAIGE.
Soothing and melodic, ‘Higher Than’ is a flowing and laidback track. At first listen, I was unsure whether the layering of instrumentation atop KAYPAIGE’s vocals was a good idea; however, I was shown that they really know what they’re doing and it sounds great. The prominence of guitars, in particular, does not detract from the calming and sincere vocals. In fact, it may be this layering that makes ‘Higher Than’ far more distinct than other pop meets RnB singles I have heard this year. Intriguing.
