Track of the Day: Katie Keddie – Help Me See
Since her debut single in 2019, singer-songwriter Katie Keddie has been turning heads and gaining a reputation for wistful, whimsical and wonderful music. From Iggy Magazine to Couch Mag, Havoc Underground and Obscure Sound, Keddie is receiving praise (or at least getting attention) from notable independent blogs, not to mention the various playlist adds. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Help Me See’.
Hot on the heels of her single ‘Maybe You Were Right’, UK-based artist Keddie hits us with her new song ‘Help Me See’. A contemporary folk sound can be heard in the modern-day melody; however, her charming vocals bring a nostalgic flair to the single. Acoustic and simplistic, Keddie shows us the beauty of minimalism in music – plus her reminiscence to Sinead O’Connor is almost frightening. The most intriguing aspect of her music is how the songs have a whimsical quality but also a heavier, more authoritative tone with the rock-inspired guitars.
While the track has a softer, soothing tone to it, there is a more intricate thread woven into the sonic tapestry. Keddie effortlessly finds the delicate balance between organic and synthetic in her obscure folk-inspired melody; however, sprinkles of rock and dustings of light-hearted pop make a kaleidoscopic sonic rollercoaster. The addition of male backing vocals as an ending collides with the light notes wafting down from above. The impressive rock guitar solo in the middle also adds an edge making her soothing but also heavy.
The third single from her upcoming album, Katie Keddie shares that ‘Help Me See’ is “one of my favourites and is about the importance of seeing and trying to work to overcome problems rather than just sticking your head in the sand.” This message and so much more are elegantly expressed in the tender tones of ‘Help Me See’.
