Track of the Day: Joel Rivendell – Melbourne

For over 30 years, singer-songwriter Joel Rivendell has been sharing his music with the world. As a skilled songwriter, performer and all-around awesome musician, the veteran artist has experience in old-school styles and embraces the modern-day online music industry. A year ago, Rivendell began releasing music through multi-digital distribution and accordingly garnered a following by reaching audiences across the globe. Along with his streaming success, he is turning the heads of international critics with features on Less Than 1000 Followers, Plastic Magazine, Edgar Allan Poets, TPJL News, Indie O Clock, Info Music, and various playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Melbourne’.

Initially released in 2016, Rivendell’s track ‘Melbourne’ is a sentimental, nostalgic and tender tribute to his hometown in Australia. In today’s uncertain society, it is difficult to determine how a city or country will change…will it be for the better or the worse? In ‘Melbourne’, Rivendell centres around the theme of “what is going to happen”, something that many people avoid hoping Melbourne will remain a haven for him.

“’Melbourne’ is a bit of a love song to my home town. The lyrics are in part a big up for this great city. There are also themes around hope that Melbourne avoids becoming a troubled city in future as well as a wistful, somewhat nostalgic aspect throughout the song that secretly, and irrationally, wishes Melbourne never changes.” – Joel Rivendell on ‘Melbourne’

Laidback with groovy, chilled-out vibes, Rivendell pulls you into a charming pop melody with ‘Melbourne’. Reminiscent of the 70s and 80s pop meets jazz sounds, there is a dewy-eyed elegance to the track; however, a modern-day flow exists making the song edgy and before its time (remember, the release was in 2016). If we jump ahead to Rivendell’s most recent single ‘Street Life’, we can hear a lighter, up-tempo electropop style with a yesteryear pop tone underlying the single.

Easily placed alongside the likes of George Benson, ‘Melbourne’ has an elegance to soothe your heart, tap your toes and hit that groovy soundscape with a kaleidoscopic bang.
