Track of the Day: Jagas – ‘Ma Brésilienne’ (2023)

Celebrating life, love and everything in between, French band Jagas use powerful rock music to express the joy of the human spirit. Known for their energy, enthusiasm and “give me a big hug and sing along” attitude, Jagas is more than just a band, they are forceful representatives of pure emotion. This is my introduction to Jagas, but they have entertained the masses for almost one decade. From their self-titled EP in 2014 to the single ‘Comment on s’aime? En avant toute(s)’, the five-piece reaches audiences on an international scale with critical acclaim. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Ma Brésilienne’.

Using the typical style of French music, Jagas bring us a sensational style of French rock in its most raw form. Unlike the crashing drums, scorching guitars and hard-hitting twirls of mainstream rock, French rock showcases the smoother, melodic side of rock with silky execution. Following ‘Comment on s’aime? En avant toute(s)’, Jagas finds a line between charming traditional chanson and caressing folk rock, then blurs it with a sensual veil of the Mediterranean.

One of the most charming aspects of Jagas and ‘Ma Brésilienne’ is the French lyrics. As an English speaker, I have no clue what Thomas Humbert is singing about in his rich, dulcet register; all I know is that this is sublime. The fusion of Enzo Derlon’s bass, Theo De Hond’s guitar and Romain Bouiges’ drums meld harmonically in a warm rush of sound. Add slips of Clarisse Catarino’s accordion and piano, and you find yourself lost in the tender ballad.

“This song is not just a beautiful declaration of love to the singer’s partner: it’s an invitation and an encouragement to simply defend love, to take care of it, to commit oneself, to never tire of building and consolidating this unique bond of passionate love. In short, to keep love alive!” – Jagas on ‘Ma Brésilienne’
