Track of the Day: in earnest – Put Me Under
Hailing from Southend-on-Sea, in earnest is an emerging indie-rock group bringing people “sad indie noise”. Fueled by the songwriting skills of front-couple Thomas Eatherton and Sarah Holbum, they use personal dialogues to develop new songs and a new sound. Joined by Toby Shaer in 2019, in earnest forgoes any prominent percussion or drums favouring electronic arrangements. Sarah’s voice, supported by the powerful arrangements, demonstrates skill in making “sad indie noise”. In 2020, in earnest released their debut single ‘Put Me Under’ reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers, Elliott Smith and Julien Baker.
“I suffer from chronic anxiety and depression to the point where I can’t hold down jobs or be left alone for too long. In my loneliness, I am awash with negative thoughts. The song is about feeling overcome by an invisible illness, but knowing it’s a lot easier to cope in the company of a dog.” – Sarah Holbum on ‘Put Me Under’
