Track of the Day: HIGHWAYVES – FRAME IT (2023)

With a self-proclaimed obsessive approach to their art, artistic collective HIGHWAYVES have been described as “electrifying” (Sinusoidal Music), “exquisite” (Wolf In A Suit), and reminiscent of “…The Smiths with some angular moments that sounds like it’s been cherry-picked from peak indie-rock…” (It’s All Indie) – and that’s based on their debut single ‘FRAME IT’. As a newbie to the rock music scene, HIGHWAYVES can be considered a minnow in a sonic pool of sharks; however, their energetic, engaging and intoxicating sound ensures they will be gaining international recognition quickly. In fact, I think they already are turning heads internationally.

Blasting onto the scene, the Isle of Man-based HIGHWAYVES lie somewhere between Tame Impala, The 1975 and Radiohead with their debut single. Punctuated with the aggression of old-school grunge, the power of mid-2000s indie-rock and a slice of 90s alternative rock, the lads are a bit of a punch to the chest…but in a good way. Mixed by well-known producer Robin Schmidt (YUNGBLUD, The 1975), ‘FRAME IT’ is a sophisticated, textured arrangement of bold drums, dynamic guitars and gruff vocals wrapped in an aggressive musical package. Interestingly enough, while the instrumentation each has a prominence, it all comes together harmonically in a ferocious rock-inspired song.

The first of what I believe will be many gripping releases, HIGHWAYVES are “unashamedly earnest laying bare their deepest emotions for all to join in collective catharsis.” Slithering in through your ear, rocking about your cranium and leaving you gasping for breath, this new band is inimitable and explosively hypnotic.
