Track of the Day: Hana Piranha – Lorelei (2023)
Whether it was divine providence or mere coincidence, Hana Maria (also known as Hana Piranha) was born during a hurricane – a beginning to the turbulent, disturbing and irrational darkness of her musical journey. Embracing her natural talent for music, Hana Piranha relocated from New Zealand to England at the age of twelve to pursue a career as a concert violinist. The mourning poignancy of the violin struck Hana’s heart and oozed from her fingers; however, she became bored with classical music turning her disillusioned sound into a rock-inspired field.
Born during a hurricane, the core of Hana Piranha is found in the eye of the storm. Calm and magical but surrounded by the tumultuous insanity of the storm surge, Hana’s music entwines the darkness of art and life within the devastating twirls. Yes, hurricanes are dreadful with desperate anger raging through; however, just as they are terrifying, they are also incredibly exciting in their irrationality. The sentiment of frightful thrills and exhilaration oozes from the melodies carried by Hana Piranha, Mishkin Fitzgerald, Jim Beck and Andrew Lane.
Following the well-received single ‘The Devil Always Pulls Through’, the UK-based foursome moves from an eclectic hard rock to grunge-inspired sound in ‘Lorelei’. As with ‘Fucked Up Feeling’, the incorporation of a classical violin amidst crashing rock tones enhances a gut-wrenching heartache in the wailing strings. Layering pounding drums with soaring guitars met by stabbing keys, the melody creates a wall of sound rushing past in kaleidoscopic chaos.
One aspect I find particularly intriguing is how the insanity of sound is conflicting but simultaneously harmonious in classical precision and intricacy. Alongside the harsh melody, a rich warmth oozes forth in Hana Piranha’s bold vocals. Almost screaming in a desperate tone, you can hear the rage of her spirit as she shares her story of an abusive relationship. Interestingly, while inner demons leap forth in a fiery barebones starkness, a line of hopefulness swoops through as she “invites the listener to share in the healing that can be found not just in the music but in the visceral vulnerability that drives her.”
In addition to the single, Hana Piranha released an official music video for ‘Lorelei’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel. Please note: this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
