Track of the Day: Gold Frames – Burning Bridges (2023)

Weathering the storm of the pandemic years, UK-based group Gold Frames emerged like a beautiful phoenix from the ashes of lockdown creating something not quite label-friendly. Genre-defying, there is a uniqueness to Gold Frames, but what I do know is the lads have an 80s nostalgic flair swaddled in a modern-day indie groove. So, why haven’t we heard of this fabulous foursome before? Simple: this is their debut single.

Originally formed in 2020, Gold Frames was one of the last bands to record at the iconic Abbey Road Studios before Covid-19 took hold of the globe. Yet, while Lloyd Entwistle (vocals) and Jack Hollister (guitars) were sent home, they did not sit on their laurels. By the time people could emerge from their Covid Cocoon, Gold Frames was a quartet with Anthony Baldock (bass) and Mark Hughes (drums) onboard. Despite the pandemic stealing time, Gold Frames quickly built a following supporting European band Donkey Kid during their London tour, as well as earning features in publications like Thoughts Words Actions and Less Than 1000 Followers.

Drawing together their diverse experiences and influences as musicians, Gold Frames present their first single ‘Burning Bridges’. Bold and brash from the outset, ‘Burning Bridges’ pushes you from your seat with the hard-hitting drumming – something which continues throughout the single. You can feel the ferocity of Hughes’ chaotic drumming, but it is the combination of the drums, guitars and bass that seem to send one’s soul soaring. Baldock’s pounding bass belies Hollister’s passionate guitars hitting you between the eyes with the harmonic melody.

Smooth and soothing but also containing the harshness of old-school indie-rock, Entwistle rocks you gently with his dulcet vocals…but it doesn’t stay that way. As we hear the lyrics “I feel the temperature rising”, his voice falls alongside the chaotic instrumentation allowing madness to ensue. Before you know it, the mellow flow is a ferocious punch of rock tossing you from pillar to post. Based on ‘Burning Bridges’, I highly recommend this up-and-coming band to everyone!
