Track of the Day: Giu – Lover’s High (2023)

Beginning her musical career posting covers on YouTube, US-based Giu proves her skill for singing other people’s songs; however, as the years progress, we see (or rather hear) that she is even more skilled in creating original material. Many artists use music as a catharsis or means of expression but for Giu it was literally a way of communicating. Overcoming selective mutism, and being able to share a whole spectrum of emotions without words is what drew this singer-songwriter to music. From Sinusoidal Music to Music Arena GH, Send Me Your Ears, and SONO Music Group, Giu has been turning heads across the globe since 2020. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Lover’s High’.

Following her track ‘Run Away’, Giu blasts into 2023 with her alternative pop meets pop-rock tune ‘Lover’s High’. As with ‘Run Away’, Giu uses complex production to explore complicated life experiences; however, ‘Lover’s High’ shows us a deeper, more intimate side of Giu. Delicate and endearing, the elegant arrangement has a slightly wistful tone to it – or at least this is what we hear in the opening. As the melody progresses, a darker, deeper and more intense sound flows through capturing your soul with a hazy tenderness. The bold drums near the end add a harder rock-inspired tone to ‘Lover’s High’ before trailing off leaving Giu’s hypnotic vocals to ensnare your senses.

While the melody can hold its own with Giu’s haunting vocals sending shivers down your spine, it is the lyricism that highlights Giu’s true depth as a songwriter. Unlike previous tracks, ‘Lover’s High’ touches on the more challenging aspects of a relationship – the feeling of addiction, inner turmoil and desperation.

“This is a song about feeling trapped in your own bad habits and being addicted to feeling unwell. We all go through difficult times in our lives and deserve to have someone there for us but, for me, it felt like it became an issue when I couldn’t get through daily activities without my person being there with me. I felt co-dependent and weak. It was like the panic attacks and the process of getting through them was a “high” I couldn’t get enough of. Once I realised this, I tried my best to heal in a healthy way…” – Giu on ‘Lover’s High’
