Track of the Day: Flat Moon – A Moon’s Bouche (2024)

Whipping across the sound spectrum landing somewhere between funk and punk, Flat Moon is kaleidoscopic, experimental and anything but pedestrian. A blast from the past but with a shout from the present, the UK-based band are an eclectic six-piece creating music for the future taking listeners with them on the mad journey. With the sophistication and maturity of a well-seasoned band, but the youthful energy and raucousness of their up-and-coming status, Flat Moon is…well, quite something. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘A Moon’s Bouche’.

Following their well-received tune ‘Don’t Look In The Mirror’, ‘A Moon’s Bouche’ shoves listeners into a funky punk sonic whirlpool. I could denote certain elements and styles in ‘A Moon’s Bouche’, but then again, my thoughts would only be shoved aside with the next chord; one thing I do know is how Flat Moon combines hard-hitting brashness with soothing sassiness in a vintage and contemporary concoction. Threading a silvery thread across genres, decades and generations, the group are inimitable with obscure insatiability.

Now, let’s get to ‘A Moon’s Bouche’ with individuality; that’s the prominent factor: individuality. While a strong Latin-tinged flavour gets your hips swaying, a glimpse of hard-hitting eeriness reaches into your heart with a high-voltage rush of sound. While soaring guitars streak through the funk meets rock sonic line, ‘A Moon’s Bouche’ brims with rhythmic percussion. The sensual saxophone makes an appearance with a cheeky grin; however, it is the bouncing but gritty vocals that capture my attention.

Confident and bold, Flat Moon stands tall as an undeniable force of nature and this is strongly evident in the chaos of ‘A Moon’s Bouche’. Pleasant chaos, the track is a mad flood of kaleidoscopic sound; however, within the craziness is precise clarity and harmony as each instrument is perfectly placed. The band share that ‘A Moon’s Bouche’ is about “…feeling creatively stagnant and the frustration that ensues as a result…” – the track’s mania is the solution.
