Track of the Day: Femegades – Be Alone
Described as passionate, energetic and a band that stands for something more in their path of music making, UK-based Femegades bring their powerful music to the masses. A force to be reckoned with, the punk rock quartet have an almost palpable grittiness to their intoxicating sound. Featured on Find No Enemy, The Punk Head, We Write About Music, She Makes Music, RGM, When The Horn Blows and various playlists, the group has been reaching international audiences since last year (or at least on the blogosphere). The latest addition to their discography is ‘Be Alone’.
The second single from their upcoming EP Not All Men, ‘Be Alone’ is another example of Femegades’ provocative songwriting. Often tackling the controversial topic of females being subjected to male violence, their powerful lyricism takes on the sensitive theme. In their previous track ‘Speechless’ the band looked at the argument of not all men being violent as a way of “pushing the issue to one side…”; in ‘Be Alone’ they explore the dangers of exploitation, regret and damage in the unregulated surrogate industry.
With their powerful punk rock style, the arrangement presents dynamic guitars and pounding drums but in a melodic style. The expertly textured sound brings a palpable gruffness to the melody; however, the female vocals add a smoother layer in its bold, rich tones. What I find even more intriguing is how the lead vocals are smooth and warm but also express the anger, frustration and potential regret felt by the surrogate mother in the sonic tale.
It is difficult to describe Femegades’ music as they stand out in a crowd completely unique and inimitable. ‘Be Alone’ is another of their eclectic singles and the sensitivity behind the already sensitive theme makes the track even more emotive. I cannot wait for more from this talented group of musicians.
