The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Electric High – Crooks (2023)

Rolling at a million miles an hour, rock group Electric High have no sign of stopping dragging you into the rock race as they pass. Our team at The Other Side Reviews began running alongside the Norwegian five-piece a couple of years ago with ‘Sleeping With The Enemy’; now, we’re trying to keep up the energy with their new single ‘Crooks’. Come roll along with us, won’t you? We promise it’s a lot of fun.

Always eager to tackle the best and worst of reality in a hard-hitting pound of music, Electric High crept into the shadows in their single ‘Morning Star’ and pushed the idea of white lies becoming darker in ‘Colorful White Lies’. In ‘Crooks’, they tackle the world of being duped and completely taken advantage of – in other words, being the victim of a crook. Inspired by an unbelievable (although it really happened) tale of Electric High’s bassist, Einride Torvik, fist fighting with a Russian guy then making peace and leaning toward friendship only to land up in jail because that guy has relations to the Russian Mafia, and then realising the dude stole his apartment key ultimately culminating in Torvin’s apartment being ransacked, ‘Crooks’ is what it says on the tin.

Bold and brash, Electric High’s ‘Crooks’ is filled with an aggressive pounding of nervous energy. Embracing the frustration and anger felt when Torvik found his apartment completely cleared, the single oozes raw classic rock. Pounding drums pulsate behind with scorching guitars slicing through the melody. What I find intriguing is how the heavy rock chaos, only amplified by guitar riffs and crashing drums, seems contained. Ferocity floats in a bubble of rage, but a shimmer of light-hearted, toe-tapping rock keeps you smiling despite the inspired circumstances.

As with their previous single ‘Flicking The Bees’, there is a leaning toward Aerosmith with their unique brand of rock. For me, the best part of the song is the ending. This is not because ‘Crooks’ is about to finish, in fact, I think the song’s too short, but the effect of its abrupt closing. It gives a hint of exasperation as we have to move on with life. Damn crooks!
