Track of the Day: Elco Zac – Did You Notice?

If David Bowie were to have a child with James Taylor, the chances are it would be Elco Zac. The brainchild of solo artist Eldad Cohen, Elco Zac blends elements of various genres to “capture the truth and essence of life”. Raised in Italy, Haiti, Chile and Israel, Zac had an interesting childhood filled with unique experiences; however, the emotional consequences made him question himself. Using music as a “tool to bring himself and his audience closer to the inner truth”, he has been connecting on an intimate level with listeners. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Did You Notice’.

Following his track ‘Please Please Forgive Me’, Elco Zac once again taps into his inner Bowie in ‘Did You Notice?’. As with ‘Please Please Forgive Me’, there is a glam rock meets pop obscurity to the tune. A bit disconcerting from the beginning with wavering synths in the background, you feel slightly dazed. Yet, this dazed ambience is not off-putting but rather enticing. The swells into smooth beats are like an elegant bridge over a sonic pool; however, there are “tinkles” that act like kaleidoscopic lights before your face. It is this eclecticism that adds a nostalgic flair to the contemporary track.

While the melody is interesting and captivating on its own, Elco Zac’s vocals bring another dimension to ‘Did You Notice?’. A warm, richness oozes from his voice throughout the song, but there is a sense of melancholy lingering beneath. Elco Zac explains that ‘Did You Notice?’ looks at his childhood moving from country to country – “transitions were never easy for me…the lack of stability made me feel like I had lost the gift of being known and appreciated. In this song, I speak to my father and wonder if he’d ever notice how lost I was.”

Sentimental, reflective and heart-breaking, Elco Zac entrances us with his latest single ‘Did You Notice?’.
