Track of the Day: Dying Habit – Celestial (2024)

Discovering the line between soothing flow and abrupt brashness, then blurring it with a blast of hard rock, Dying Habit captures various flecks of rock bound by a shimmering golden ribbon. Known for their energetic, high-voltage performances, the Wales-based foursome can ensnare your senses and leave you gasping for breath with their live performances; however, Dying Habit is more than just a pretty face rocking the stage. Turning heads across the globe with their singles and albums, Nathan Jones (vocals), Alan Hart (guitar), Daniel Garner (bass) and Mark Jones (drums) reach far beyond their UK borders. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Celestial’.

Following the well-received 2022 single ‘Directions’, ‘Celestial’ sees a re-emergence of Dying Habits on the streaming scene. While a shift from the brusque alternative rock sound of ‘Directions’, ‘Celestial’ offers a forceful hard rock tone. Guitar-driven with pounding drums bringing up the rear, Dying Habit retain a rush of rawness but with a more sophisticated arrangement of instrumentation – a “combination of beauty and brutality while maintaining a melodic edge…”

The lead single from their upcoming album The Chaos of Silence, ‘Celestial’ showcases refinement of Dying Habit’s sound and style – the evolution of the band’s reckless rambunctiousness. Recorded with producer Russ Hayes, an interesting grunge-esque disconnect exists in ‘Celestial’ playing alongside harmonic soothing.

Each instrument kicks up an individual flair needing you to pay attention but then culminates in a united whole. The lift of heavy hard rock with a mellifluous alt-rock flutter then crashes in the chorus with a metal hit. The thing is, while you are pushed and pulled from one sound to another it’s all enjoyable, smile-inducing and a cacophony of eclecticism with symphonic grace.

Along with the crash and pull of the melody, the lyricism of ‘Celestial’ – executed by Jone’s angelic yet rugged vocals – adds profoundness and depth to the song. Dying Habits explain:

“Lyrically, ‘Celestial’ explores consciousness. How we know nothing about the time we spend asleep other than the dreams and nightmares we experience…in essence, the chaos of silence.”

In addition to the single, Dying Habit released a music video for ‘Celestial’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
