Track of the Day: Dom Malin – Surface (2024)

Blending the intimacy and tenderness of John Mayer, James Bay and Sam Fender, singer-songwriter Dom Malin showcases the kaleidoscopic power of simplicity in his soulful music. Embracing his passion for music at age 12 when presented with his first guitar, Malin knew he was destined to be a musician. Skip ahead several years and the UK-based artist developed his talents earning a university degree in Music and working as a teacher in a creative college, but his artistry lies within individual releases. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Surface’.

We were introduced to Dom Malin a few years back with the crooning charm of ‘Yesterday’s Love’ and ‘Cold Feet’; however, his new single turns heads with a shift from acoustic charm to electric drama. Embracing a stronger indie-rock flair with alternative rock undertones, the flood of James Bay and Tom Odell breaks apart with Malin’s powerful guitar-driven melody. The diversion in his style is not merely a change for something new but an evolution in Malin’s sincere sound. He explains:

“The inspiration for my music in 2024 stems from a desire to delve into broader themes, pushing the boundaries of my writing both lyrically and musically.”

Bolder, heavier and hard-hitting, listening to ‘Surface’ is like falling into a kaleidoscopic sonic whirlpool. Wrapping you in a hazy swirl, the sound engulfs you with a perfumed thud; however, just as you are drawn into a darker, more powerful tone, Malin’s signature vulnerability and fragility oozes from the hypnotic pool. A delicate exploration of human fragility within a gruff wrapper with rock music clinging to each edge, ‘Surface’ touches on the core of the human spirit. Malin further explains:

“’Surface’ was born from the deep-seated emotions of feeling like an outsider, perpetually on the fringes trying to belong but feeling left out. This song explores the internal struggle of wanting to be a part of something, yearning to be heard, yet often feeling like a ghost – a mere whisper in the roaring crowd…”
