Track of the Day: Dom Brinkley – Bad Wine (2023)

For the past three years, give or take, Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist Dom Brinkley has been sharing his eclectic music with the masses. From his debut single ‘Climate Blues’ in 2020 to his debut EP Moonlight Dream in 2021 and his full live album Live at the Workers Club in 2022, Brinkley has been exploring various genres in his diverse sound. Moving from psychedelic folk to soul and blues, this talented musician is proving he is more than a one-trick pony. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Bad Wine’.

Following his two-track release Live and Well, Brinkley shifts gear from blues-infused melodies to soulful funk in ‘Bad Wine’. With nostalgic flair, he drags us back to the 70s with soul overtones laid on a base of funk-rock while rock and roll teeter on the edges of the melody. Toe-tapping, feel-good and infectiously groovy, Brinkley’s guitar blends with Miles Thomas’ steady bass, Matt Capuana’s pounding drums and the twinkling of Gabriel Taburet on keyboards. While all combined in a sweet sonic wrapper, the kaleidoscopic swirl and rollercoaster of ‘Bad Wine’ has you twirling about with each instrument hitting you from a different angle…but it all comes together in a harmonic symphony.

A staple in the live set, and definitely one I would request if I saw Brinkley perform, ‘Bad Wine’ can plaster a grin on your face from the first groovy beat. What I find intriguing is how the group transfer the live session feeling into a studio version. Co-produced by Brinkley and Jack Benfold, ‘Bad Wine’ has a sophisticated elegance but also raw whimsy in the production.

Just as the melody gives you good vibes, so does the poetic lyricism. Dom Brinkley’s warm vocals bring a song of hopefulness, empowerment and heart-warming joviality as ‘Bad Wine’ speaks about “outgrowing toxic relationships and continuing down one’s own path of self-discovery.”
