Track of the Day: Dogboy – Rush (2023)

If Arctic Monkeys were to have a rebellious child with The Strokes, the chances are that little rebel would be Dogboy. With a reputation for energetic, enthusiastic and high-powered gigs, the US-based foursome garnered a following with their natural penchant for music and confident stage presence. As the lads only began releasing music in 2023, one might consider them a minnow in a pool of sharks; however, the critical acclaim on an international scale proves they are larger than life. From America’s Rock The Pigeon to the UK’s Music Arena GH and Brazil’s Music For All, Dogboy is turning heads across the globe. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Rush’.

Hot on the heels of their tracks ‘Cowboy Killer’ and ‘That’s What We Wanted’, ‘Rush’ is Dogboy’s third single in 2023. Leaning more toward their inner punk, ‘Rush’ presents a high-paced brashness not heard in previous singles. I might compare this song to Sum 41 meets The Killers bringing a nostalgic flair of pop-punk and indie-rock. Yet, just as they pay tribute to the heavy-hitting sounds of the late-90s/2000s, Dogboy retains a contemporary sound in their music bringing something both familiar and fresh.

A collaboration with Kit Conway of Del Water Gap, ‘Rush’ is bold, confident and a punch in the gut both lyrically and melodically. Fierce guitars match pounding drums in an abrupt but harmonic way. Add the gruff lead vocals and you have a soul-stirring song you can jump about to without abandon.

The third single from Dogboy’s upcoming self-titled EP, ‘Rush’ is not only intense within the tune but also in its lyrics. Touching on the “emotional gravity partners hold over each other”, the lads question how you escape the controlling monster, and once you think you’re free “life crashes in and you find yourself back in it, deeper than ever” – a complex topic folded in a ferocious song. Proving they are anything but pedestrian, I foresee a lot of awesomeness from Dogboy.
