Track of the Day: Disco Mary – Expectations

Taking their cues from groups like Gorillaz, Superorganism, The Avalanches, The Go! Team and Apples in Stereo, musical collection Disco Mary has quite an intriguing sound. Combining the talents of charley haze (vocals), Kev Sherry (vocals), Michael Beattie (guitar), Nicole Gardner (bass), Rachel Grant (guitar and synths) and Roddy McCahon (drummer), Disco Mary has been referred to as “an indie supergroup” by BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq. This is my introduction to Disco Mary, but they are already captivating audiences across the globe with features on Rising Artists Blog, Earmilk, Slate and BBC Radio. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Expectations’.

Recorded with established producer Chris McCrory, Disco Mary blends electropop, indie-rock, funk, soul and contemporary pop in their music. Exploring a slightly provocative theme in the disco-influenced ‘Expectations’, the group show they are bold in their melodic and lyrical content. Touching on today’s celebrity culture and the obsession with fame, Disco Mary questions the personal expectations of individuals. What is “the good life”? How does the media portray “the good life”? How do you know you’ve reached “the good life” and what do you do from there?

Following their EP Joy Imported From A Happier Age, ‘Expectations’ is Disco Mary’s first release in 2022. Strong synth-pop tones are arranged to create an up-tempo disco song that will get you bopping from the first chord. While the melody can easily hold its own, the movement to only vocals in the middle is possibly my favourite part of the track. It seems to exude happiness, joy and excitement without any instrumentation – only if it is for a few seconds. My one complaint about ‘Expectations’ is that it ends too quickly.

Sincere, sentimental and engaging, this honest reflection on success really hits a nerve. As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Disco Mary, and I cannot wait for more!
