Track of the Day: Dirty Power – I Did My Time (2023)

I could call Dirty Power the lovechild of Nirvana and Rammstein, and I really thought about that, but it wouldn’t be fair to Dirty Power. Inspired by the likes of Nirvana, Rammstein and Rage Against The Machine, there is a hard-hitting forcefulness behind the UK-based group; however, their slick sauntering through various types of rock is slightly more eclectic. Formed by frontman Brendan and some “capable and rocking musician buddies”, Dirty Power is at its core a hard-hitting pulse of bold rock sounds. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘I Did My Time’.

Following the well-received debut album Notions, ‘I Did My Time’ is far less pulse-racing than the tracks ‘Could You Be?’ and ‘The End’ (both found on the Notions album). With a smooth calm, ‘I Did My Time’ leans toward an acoustic sound with bold guitars and heavy drums meeting each other in the single. Interestingly, while there is a flow in the grunge sound, it is far more intense hitting nerves in a subdued pulse-racing way. Merely a guitar, bass and drum set, you might think the track simplistic; however, an intimacy exists in the simplicity that oozes overwhelming vulnerability.

Taken off their upcoming album Gravitas, ‘I Did My Time’ is an intimate exploration of human fragility in a disillusioned world. The potency of the hard-hitting music, despite being slowed in a hazy ambience, speaks to those innermost thoughts of despair, angst and oddly enough enlightenment. Recorded in Brendan’s ancestor’s castle on the South-West coast of Ireland, there is a hushed desperation penetrating the live melody. Brendan explains:

“Inspired by acoustic songs like ‘Something In The Way’ by Nirvana, ‘Jail’ by Down and ‘Ohne Dich’ by Rammstein, ‘I Did My Time’ is a song about a return to roots and the truth that to sacrifice one’s own time for the benefit of others is the most meaningful and worthwhile thing anyone can do.”

In addition to the single, Dirty Power released an official music video for ‘I Did My Time’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
