Track of the Day: David Finck – Só Pra Dizer (2023)

A little over four decades ago, bassist David Finck moved to New York and quickly established himself as a force of nature in the US jazz scene. The thing is, while he emerged as an artist in the 1980s touring and collaborating with various performers, such as Natalie Cole, Rod Stewart and Elton John, his passion for music began much earlier. Raised in a musical family, Finck began playing bass at the age of ten. As a teenager, he studied privately with Sam Goradetzer and Michael Shahan of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He earned a degree from the Eastman School of Music and toured with Woody Herman before the move to New York and…the rest is history.

Finck is now noted as one of the most sophisticated acoustic jazz performers with a background most would give their left arm to have; however, it was only in the 2000s that he stood up as a solo artist and band leader. In 2008, he released his debut album Future Day featuring Tom Ranier (piano), Joe Locke (vibraphone) and Joe La Barbera (drums). In 2011 he collaborated with pianist Roger Davidson for Umbrellas & Sunshine: The Music of Michel Legrand. Skip ahead a decade or so and Finck released A Beautiful Friendship collaborating with various award-winning musicians. Jump into this album with us as we listen to ‘Só Pra Dizer’.

While the Covid pandemic caused havoc with live performances and hampered musicians’ careers, David Finck composed and produced the single ‘Só Pra Dizer’. Using the power of virtual collaboration, Finck enlisted lyricist Celso Viafora and singer Téka Peneriche in this passionate song. As with the various tracks on A Beautiful Friendship, such as ‘I’m All Smiles’ and ‘On My Way To You’, ‘Só Pra Dizer’ has an underlying acoustic jazz tone; however, ‘Só Pra Dizer’ inserts a soulful bossa nova into the melody. Interestingly, while the single has a bold sensuality with rich warmth, a simplistic jazz tone steadies the whimsical samba flow. Rhythmic and harmonious, listening to ‘Só Pra Dizer’ gives you a heady sensation of complete intoxication as if you were walking through a perfumed sonic fog losing yourself in the journey.

In all honesty, jazz is not my favourite genre. I love myself some Sade and adore the jazz-rock styles of Chicago BUT now I know there is another soothing acoustic jazz to soothe my soul. With A Beautiful Friendship, my soul soars to an otherworldly haunting played for the masses but shared as a secret gift for me alone.
