Track of the Day: Dana Luna – Train Delay (2024)

Inspired by life in its totality with all the intricacies of experience and emotions, singer-songwriter Dana Luna uses music as a catharsis, a place of solace and a means of expressing herself through creativity. Delving primarily into the realm of pop-punk, Luna has established herself as a prominent force in the scene; however, her experimental nature sees her pushing the boundaries of pop-punk stamping her name with eclectic individuality. From her 2022 single ‘Back&Forth’ to 2023’s ‘Mean Girls 3’ and the current ‘Mascara’, she turns heads on an international scale ensnaring audiences with a cheeky wink. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Train Delay’.

Following her well-received songs ‘Screw You’ and ‘Mascara’, ‘Train Delay’ is a kaleidoscopic swirl of obscurity and enigmatic sound. Unlike the pop-punk heaviness of ‘Screw You’ and hip-hip-tinged ‘Mascara’, ‘Train Delay’ blurs elements of soul, indie-pop and jazz with slivers of rap fluttering from her lyrical execution. Produced and recorded with long-time collaborator Tayte Nickols, ‘Train Delay’ is a concoction of dynamic guitars, bold bass and shimmering synths with interspersed horns and strings adding an edgy jazz vibe.

While Luna’s music typically revolves around difficult relationships, ‘Train Delay’ is a relatable tune tackling one of the most toxic relationships many people face: the struggle with public transport. Amusing and humorous, ‘Train Delay’ will have you grinning and nodding your head in that “oh yes, I’ve been there”. She explains:

“I wrote this song after arriving late at a studio session due to train delays, I told my producer I was sick of writing about dissatisfactory love interests and would rather use the time to articulate something reflecting an even more toxic relationship – the one I have with public transport.”

One of the more interesting artists to reach our virtual desk and definitely one to watch. Highly recommended.
