Track of the Day: Colorado & Company – Still (2023)
Described as having “tangible richness…making for a strong emotional resonance” (Various Small Flames), “…passion and precision…” (Music On The Moon) and “…powerful and emotional…” (Music Taste), Colorado & Company is turning heads with their unique sound. Combining the talent of musicians Heath Jensen, Daniele Montarulo, Sam Zanelli, Andy Collingwood and Matthew Ciao, this young band is bringing a fresh indie meets folk meets rock brand of music. With only two singles under their belt, the relatively new group is swimming in a sonic sea of sharks, but they hold their own. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Still’.
Following their debut single ‘Break’ released at the end of April 2023, ‘Still’ is the sophomore single from Colorado & Company. Continuing the road to another “unique, forefront Australian album”, ‘Still’ cements an indie-folk sound for Colorado & Company. True, this is only their second single so it is likely more versatility will be seen (or rather heard) in upcoming material. In fact, versatility, innovation and diversity are evident within this charming melody. An incorporation of indie-rock slithering through the song with gruff vocals brings a bolder, harder-hitting style. Moreover, the interspersed violin with pianos in the background adds an orchestral element giving Colorado & Company an eclectic edginess.
While the instrumentation holds its own in a sophisticated arrangement, it is the soaring vocals that add something special to ‘Still’. The inspired violin section definitely adds another layer to ‘Still’, but it is the dulcet vocals that push a sense of melancholy in the tune. Gruff but warm, tender but brash, the folk-influenced vocals connect with audiences on a deeper level.
Sincere, sentimental, raw and heart-breaking, Colorado & Company entices listeners with an uplifting yearning in a vulnerable sonic river. This is my first taste of Colorado & Company and I’m eager to hear more from the talented Aussie quintet.
