Track of the Day: Cole Blu – Thundering, Blissful (2023)

Performing under the moniker Cole Blu, US-based Cole Blouin is an artist painting his sonic picture with a kaleidoscopic palette of sound. From Obscure Sound to iHeart Radio, his unique music has been described as an experimental melding of krautrock, art-pop, jazz and electropop. Using his compelling music, Blu not only explores various sounds but is willing to explore different themes ranging from spiritual discovery and alien remoteness. Come with us as we dip into Cole Blu’s music with the single ‘Thundering, Blissful’.

Following his well-received single ‘Boston Story’, ‘Thundering, Blissful’ is part of Blu’s new album Torso. Showcasing his diverse range, versatility and eclecticism, Torso traipses several genres; however, ‘Thundering, Blissful’ is potentially one of the most obscure and genre-bending. A strong electronic tone is heard from the first second with hard-hitting beats dominating the melody. The thing is, just as electronic beats stamp across the tune, an eclectic use of synths flows through ‘Thundering, Blissful’. Ecstatic and exhilarating, this song is a mishmash of crazy beats twirling about you in a high-paced sonic haze.

I would describe the song as obscure but completely glitched-out and chaotic is probably more accurate. I quickly imagined ‘Thundering, Blissful’ to be the soundtrack to a Star Wars battle with shots firing from every angle. As the chaos ensures, you become uncomfortable in its madness BUT just as you think the Jedis are about to get their light sabres out, a dip into soft, soothing sound appears. Like the calm after the storm, you feel your soul lighten and begin to float in a mellifluous tune.
