Track of the Day: Clare Easdown – I Break (2023)

Combining classical training with a self-taught approach to music, singer-songwriter Clare Easdown brings an ethereal trance of cinematic sound to listeners. When we left Easdown with her single ‘I’ll Wait’, she was unleashing a desperate cry of yearning through dark-pop stylings. In ‘I Break’ she continues her intricate examination of the human spirit tackling the grittier side of mental health. Inspired by life in its totality, Easdown is unafraid to touch on the more sensitive areas of life, and she does this in her latest single.

Hot on the heels of her tracks ‘Take Your Pills, Pay Your Bills’ and ‘CRUCIFY ME’, Easdown adopts an alternative pop sound infiltrated by the intimacy of Amanda Palmer and The Cranberries. Set to a cinematic slew of synths muddling about in the lingering depths of grunge, there is a distorted effect to the melody. Yet, while a slight distortion and discomfort exist, a mellifluous soothing seems to carry one across the grittiness.

Once again joining forces with producer Jeremy Burns, ‘I Break’ is a sophisticated, well-textured arrangement. The murkiness of the melodic base elegantly captures the haunting of Easdown’s vocals; however, the subdued vocals woven into the background present a heavier, harder, more intimate effect. Layering further vocals in the forefront, there is a disconnect between the depressed melody and lighter voice – a sonic representation of the desperate feeling of mental health breakdown but a hopeful tinge of acceptance and security.

Human vulnerability is at the core of Easdown’s music, and she continues to tackle our fragility with ‘I Break’. The melody can ensnare your senses, but it is the theme behind the tune that adds profoundness. Clare Easdown explains:

“’I Break’ delves into the deep, dark depths of depression and all mental health disorders in general and how debilitating it can be for many individuals. Mental health affects a huge number of people every day, and this track seeks to provide empathy, solace and a safe place for all those experiencing the debilitating lows of depression…” – Clare Easdown on ‘I Break’

Sincere, honest and painfully raw, Easdown strips back the breathtaking challenges of mental health while offering a place of security, safety and hope in ‘I Break’.
