Track of the Day: Chandra – I’ll Be There (2024)

If Weezer and Good Charlotte were to have a child and it was raised by McFly, the chances are it would be Chandra. Holding a torch for old-school pop-rock, Chandra’s melodies ooze with nostalgia and breathe life into the vintage sounds of Green Day and Sum 41. Yet, while vintage tones shiver through his singles, Chandra inserts a contemporary edginess making pop-rock transcend decades with generations. We came across the UK-based singer-songwriter last year with his single ‘Pretty’, and he hits our ears again with ‘I’ll Be There’.

Sauntering into 2024 with charismatic confidence, Chandra brings his signature “feel-good pop-rock” sound to the masses with ‘I’ll Be There’. Just as upbeat and filled with bouncy joviality as in ‘Pretty’ and ‘Smile (No Fox Gibbon)’, you can lose yourself jumping about and playing air guitar with ‘I’ll Be There’; however, a deeper, darker alternative rock veil wraps about the infectious melody.

Slicking various flavours of rock, ‘I’ll Be There’ straddles pop-rock with a touch of pop-punk slicing through the melody. Pounding drums match dynamic guitars flooding your head with a rush of harmonic music; however, the crescendo into a rock guitar solo pierces the unity in its outstanding riffs. Chandra’s distinctive vocals bind the melody with glittering fluorescence inserting a mellifluous quality to ‘I’ll Be There’. Interestingly, while the symphony of sound carries you across a heart-warming rainbow, it is the theme that enhances sincerity and sentimentality. Chandra explains:

“I used to despair at the fact that nothing I did would make a blind bit of difference against the swirling vortex of war, disease, corruption, political turmoil and environmental disasters. Waking up every day to a backdrop of relentless bad news, feeling helpless to do anything about it really gets you down. But the truth is we can effect a change and it all starts right here, at home, with how we treat one another… I wrote this song to help everyone realise that you can make small changes to the way you act. Simply be there for someone, smile at someone and with every single positive move we dissipate more and more bad feeling…”

In addition to the single, Chandra released an official music video for ‘I’ll Be There’. You can view the video below or on Chandra’s YouTube channel.
