The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Cassidy Dickens – Close To My Chest (2023)

Whoever said being in love is simple is probably stuck in the sublime side of love where no air of conflict exists. Either that or they are a rather easy-going person who lets everything slide, or they’re just really good at conflict negotiation. Love and relationships are beautiful, but they are also complex. In her previous single ‘Deep End’, singer-songwriter Cassidy Dickens took us on the push-and-pull journey of heady romance. In her new single ‘Close To My Chest’, she becomes more introspective exploring the vulnerability of sharing your feelings with others.

Penned and recorded at The Record Shop with producer Sean Giovanni, ‘Close To My Chest’ is Dickens’ third single of 2023. As with ‘Deep End’ and ‘All I’m Missing’, Dickens adopts that Nashville country sound in ‘Close To My Chest’. The thing is, Dickens shifts from a vulnerable ballad to a happier acoustic style in the new track.

Simplistic with a barebones starkness to the soundscape, Dickens brings a jovial bounce to ‘Close To My Chest’ with tinges of bright pop twinkling throughout the song. From the opening acoustic guitar to underlying percussion, the single has a toe-tapping sensation with a smooth charm that will cause you to smile. Interestingly, just as Dickens’ warm vocals lie atop a mellifluous melody, the juxtaposition of laidback joy and vulnerable fear makes the song playful but poignant.

“I think people sometimes assume that for artists sharing our emotions and stories comes easy. For me though, there’s always been this dichotomy where I can be brutally honest and open in a song in a way that I feel extremely difficult in real life… This song is my way of making sense of that dichotomy and bringing levity to the tension that so many of us feel around expressing our feelings authentically.” – Cassidy Dickens on ‘Close To My Chest’
