Track of the Day: Carsten Schnell – I Have Been Waiting (2023)

In an interview with Lost In The Manor, singer-songwriter and composer Carsten Schnell shared that he wasn’t honestly sure when he first got into music, but he knows it was there for as long as he can remember – “…I’ve always made music, even as a small child”. He might have embraced the music bug early on, but it was in 1994 that he stunned critics with his debut album Adjust. Opulent and unusual, the classically trained musician inserted an electronic twinkle into organic instrumental melodies. 30 years later, Schnell has shifted to a more blues-rock sound and continues to stupefy critics across the globe.

Following the critically acclaimed ‘Another Day Another Dollar’, a blues-rock song reminiscent of BB King, Schnell releases ‘I Have Been Waiting’. Tapping into his Buddy Holly with a hint of Muddy Waters flowing through the melody, Schnell brings an old-school blues sound to our ears. Embracing an organic arrangement, ‘I Have Been Waiting’ is a fusion of piano, guitars, bass, drums and Schnell’s gruff vocals. Just as Schnell is skilled with electronic-based compositions, the pounding drums, dynamic guitars, sensual bass and masterful piano of ‘I Have Been Waiting’ showcases his genre-diverse musicality.

For me, it is the combination of guitars, piano and rugged vocals that make the song a soul-stirring one. An almost palpable grittiness oozes from ‘I Have Been Waiting’ hitting you on the chin but also making you grin. The epitome of old-school Chicago blues, this song is one for blues lovers; however, it has a rock sentimentality that will appease rock audiences alike.

Haunting, intoxicating and an all ‘round bag of sensual chilled-out grooves, ‘I Have Been Waiting’ is the song we have all been waiting for.

In addition to the single, Carsten Schnell released an official music video for ‘I Have Been Waiting’. You can view it below or via his official YouTube channel.
