Track of the Day: Carson Ferris – Drive Alone
In my opinion, children today are growing up far too quickly. Perhaps it is our uncertain society, social media and the need to make changes immediately, but, seriously, kids today are no longer kids. In the case of 12-year-old singer-songwriter Carson Ferris, he is already recording music with renowned producers and there is a lot more to come. When I was 12, I spent most of my time swooning over the Backstreet Boys or watching Titanic too many times. Young Carson Ferris is far superior to that and has recently released his new single ‘Drive Alone’.
Described as “melodic pop with a driving beat, soaring vocals and meaningful metaphors”, Carson Ferris’ music sends your soul soaring while keeping you firmly on the ground. His aim is to create music that is relatable, emotive and accessible, and he seems to know what he’s doing. The first single since 2021, ‘Drive Alone’ is a song about being independent, finding a path and heading off to make something of himself – a concept most Millennials didn’t encounter before their early-20s. Ferris explains that ‘Drive Alone’ “is a song about making hard decisions and having lots of people telling you that you should do this or that and you just have to do what you know is best for you”.
The follow-up to his phenomenal debut track ‘Can’t be Without You’, ‘Drive Alone’ is an upbeat commercial pop song drawing together synths, guitars and powerful beats. Recorded at Provo’s June Audio recording studio, this song was engineered with Maren Gayle and Jen Marco, mixed by Adam Turley and mastered by Eric Disero – all creating a toe-tapping, smile-inducing, well-textured single.
What I really love about Carson Ferris is his vocals. Reminding me slightly of early Justin Bieber, Ferris’ dulcet tones have a sparkling innocence in their pre-pubescent tones. You can hear his youth through the vocal execution, but the sophisticated theme far surpasses his young years. If this is what Ferris has for us now, I cannot wait to see what marvels the future holds.
