Track of the Day: Boey – Kudos (2024)

While most 13-year-olds are listening to their iPods and singing along to their favourite chart-topping hit, singer-songwriter Boey was composing music for a symphony orchestra. Alright, I’m generalising here, and all teenagers might be composing music and Boey was probably singing along to his favourite mainstream tune, but I’m astounded at Boey’s natural talent for leading his school symphony orchestra. Today, the London-based artist stirs his passion for music while training to become a registered pharmacist.

Creating melodies can seem complex, but it all begins with a few notes or words coming to you from nowhere; the shower thoughts or humming to yourself while on the bus can lead to some fantastic songs. Inspired by this magical process, Boey captures emotions, dreams, reality, and life in his songs. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Kudos’.

With a classical background and eagerness for more contemporary tones, Boey quickly discovered a unique style after becoming “more comfortable with the sound of his own voice…” On the heels of his single ‘Hurt No More’, ‘Kudos’ takes us back to vintage RnB lilting toward the indulgence of Usher, intimacy of Alicia Keys, and boldness of Toni Braxton. Fresh but highly familiar, the track brings life to 90s styles yet retains a youthful innocence in its beats.

For me, ‘Kudos’ is not merely a soothing melody, but filled with intricacy to a complex arrangement. Soft but pulsating beats carry the melody; however, precision lies in the piano, both subtle and bold. Confident but shy, forceful but fragile, melodically ‘Kudos’ seeps into your skin, grabs your heart, flows through your veins and leaves you gasping for breath… in a good way, of course.

The melody itself is soul-stirring but it is Boey’s silky vocals that bring profoundness in its lyricism. Tackling the grittiness of reality, ‘Kudos’ explores the “complexities in the human experience… to congratulate manipulators on fake victories, effortlessly breaking the façade and calling out deception behind perceived success…”

Sincere, sentimental and one of those tunes that will stick in your head for days to come, ‘Kudos’ is not only memorable, it’s unforgettable. I’m fascinated and cannot wait for Boey’s upcoming album.

In addition to the single, Boey released an official music video for ‘Kudos’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger migraines and/or seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
