Track of the Day: Blue Coffee – Dive (2024)
One might consider the unexpected death of a loved one to be devastating, tragic and dark, and it is, but what they don’t tell you is how death can lead to a beautiful celebration of life. France-based quartet Blue Coffee grew from the passing of the band members’ mutual friend; when Gautier Rodriguez (vocals and guitar), Sebastien Tourel (bass) and Nico de Bank (drums) met, collaborated and fused their passion for music. Skip ahead a few years, add guitarist Francois Debiol to the mix, and you have Blue Coffee as they are today: innovative, original and intoxicating. Join us as we delve into their latest single ‘Dive’.
Following their well-received singles ‘Smile and Tears’ and ‘Birth’, Blue Coffee ended the year with the song ‘Dive’. Similar to the previous 2024 singles, ‘Dive’ retains the hard-hitting rush of indie-rock but blends it with an obscure breath of alternative rock and grunge. Lingering in an old-school 90s indie-rock tone, the influence of Radiohead is evident. Yet, just as there is a reminiscence of Radiohead, Blue Coffee presents heavier grit in ‘Dive’; oddly enough, the grit and gruffness are soothing in its raw state.
One aspect I find intriguing is how ‘Dive’ is simultaneously uncomfortable and at ease. Belying the distortion of crashing guitars, bold bass, and soaring guitars, understanding and togetherness hold fast. Spiky but sophisticated, every instrument uses individuality to demand attention while contributing to a harmonic symphony.
Melodically, ‘Dive’ is an enticing few minutes of indie-rock; however, it is the alignment of sound and words offering greater depth. A poignant single, ‘Dive’ explores the issue of climate change – all evident in an off-kilter swoosh of heart-rendering music. Yet, there is a sense of hope lingering in the lyricism, “…the urgency of the value of hope”, which might account for the warmth of the brash ‘Dive’.
So, what are my thoughts on Blue Coffee and ‘Dive’? Already a fan of Blue Coffee, I find their originality and eclecticism exciting. When it comes to ‘Dive’, the lads push originality and authenticity to the brink with sincerity, sentimentality, and brutal honesty. ‘Dive’ is Blue Coffee’s third single in 2024, and I cannot wait to see what the lads have up their sleeve for 2025.
