Track of the Day: Bear Beat – Prism (2023)
If a person were to tell me that all electronic pop music sounds the same, I would tell them to listen to Bear Beat. From Rage Against The Machine to Chemical Brothers, Audiojack and The Prodigy, the UK-based artist has a slice of something for everyone within his electronic beats. A solo producer, DJ and beat maker, Bear Beat takes you on a mystical journey through a sublime whirl of kaleidoscopic colour with every single song. Plus, it doesn’t all sound the same – trust me on that.
Hot on the heels of his singles ‘Bolivia’ and ‘Feel It Too’, ‘Prism’ oozes individuality, authenticity and complete versatility from Bear Beat. While ‘Feel It Too’ has a softer, more soothing tone with a nostalgic whiff of The Police muddling about the synthy vibe, ‘Bolivia’ brought a harder electronic rock tone with urgency and brashness. In ‘Prism’, Bear Beat shifts gear once again merging bold beats with raw vocals atop a smooth, tender electronic melody.
While previous material has a sophisticated flow to the melody, ‘Prism’ has a ragged, raw innocence slathered across the mature arrangement blending slivers of punk, rock, and pop. Hints of The Prodigy reach out with pulsating beats and interwoven dashes of brash punk-influenced vocals. Abrupt and scorching with piercing tones and ferocious vocals, you feel lost in a personal narrative of angst and aggression. Yet, while the blunt force of electro-punk dips into the melody throughout, a progression to something mellifluous, soothing, soft and gentle in its synth-pop nature carries you off to a mystical realm of sound.
Given his musical diversity, I was unsure what to expect from Bear Beat’s recent single.. ‘Prism’ is not what I imagined blasting out of my speakers. Bear Beat’s music is bold and confident but with an elegant charm. It is discomforting at moments but ultimately reaches a harmonic flow. Raging and chilled. Forceful and laidback. Mystically relaxing and gut-wrenchingly fierce, ‘Prism’ is nothing and everything splashed upon you in a surreal fire of ethereal euphoria.
