Track of the Day: Barista – Billions

The brainchild of Turkish musician Bahadır Han Eryılmaz, Barista is a unique artist drawing together raw obscurity, heartfelt eclecticism, and sentimental honesty. With approximately eight years in the music industry, Barista is no stranger to the music scene; however, each song expresses an innocence and whimsy touching audiences on a primal level. Featured in publications like Music Existence, Indie Shark, Vents Magazine, Music Arena GH, Indie Chronique, Ein Press Wire and various others, Barista is reaching audiences across the globe. This is my introduction to the Istanbul-based artist, but I have a feeling I am going to enjoy his music.

A track on his full-length album Justice Now, ‘Billions’ brings the best of classic rock to modern-day audiences. A bold nod to the rock sounds of the 1970s, there is a nostalgic toss back to the days of loud guitars, long hair and a complete disregard for what the industry thought of their music. Re-enlisting some of the most iconic rock legends on Justice Now, we hear the skills of drummer Simon Phillips (Toto, Judas Priest), guitarist Jesse Siebenberg (Supertramp, Kenny Loggins), and vocalist Andrew Freeman (Lynch Mob, Great White) among others. ‘Billions’ is a rough, rugged and gritty few minutes of rock wrapped up in a sophisticated sonic package.

As with the tracks ‘Cage’ and ‘Justice Now’, ‘Billions’ is a song to have you swirling about playing air guitar, but simultaneously a profound and thought-provoking effort. Touching on the injustice and inequality in the world, Barista and his friends bring a political stance to the provocative single. Living in an uncertain society where “the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer”, one can easily see the rift in status from an ivory tower perspective. It’s not nice, but it exists, and Barista is not one to sit aside letting it take control. He pushes people to listen, learn and appreciate the themes in his music; perhaps, it might lead to some hopeful action. Either way, it’s a grand song to hear and even more fun to put on repeat.
