Track of the Day: Avresa – Follow Through
The Swedish word ‘avresa’ can be translated to “a departure or the act of leaving for a journey”, and this eloquently describes the core of Australian singer-songwriter Avresa. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Jeremy, Avresa is a transition of music. Moving from his four-piece alternative rock band to a solo project, this artist is earning a reputation for “raw, honest emotion” (Rising Artists Blog), “…energising and empowering indie-rock…” (Find No Enemy) and finding “positivity, purpose and meaning through difficult days” (Nexus Music Blog). The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Follow Through’.
Following his well-received track ‘Leave It All’ where Avresa considers the presumptions we make of other people’s lives based on social media, ‘Follow Through’ touches on adaptation instead of assumption. Avresa explains that this track “is about keeping a promise despite the challenges, accepting the responsibility…using different approaches to adapt to change and uncomfortable situations.” – and this is clearly evident in the melody.
Unlike ‘Leave It All’, ‘Follow Through’ has a more soothing flow to the track. Interestingly enough, while the single is an alternative rock ballad (sort of), this soothing opening is merely to lull you into a sense of security. As the track progresses, there are movements from harsher, more powerful to softer arrangements. While there is a roughness to the track with some raw emotion, Avresa showcases a sensitivity and intimacy with bold guitars, pounding drums and an interspersed piano.
As I mentioned, there is raw emotion in the melody, however, it is the lyrical content and vocal execution that seems to exude intense intimacy. Bold, rich and warm, Avresa’s tones wrap around you in a comforting hug while bringing a vulnerability to the sonic bubble. Yet, the bubble seems to burst at the end with an outbreak of melodic metal woven into the alt-rock song. What I love is how Avresa’s voice is steady and charming with its fragility despite the overwhelming power of the melody.
Sincere, sentimental and sophisticated, Avresa captures our hearts with ‘Follow Through’.
