Track of the Day: Aubrey – Bad News (2023)

Blending elements of grunge, rock and punk, UK-based trio Aubrey brings a ferocious, aggressive and terrifyingly sublime sound to your ears. Formed in 2020, Amelia, Sean and Sam have been establishing themselves as an alternative rock band in the London music scene; however, despite having a few years behind them, they are still minnows in a sonic shark pool. Do not for any reason underestimate Aubrey with their indulgent, enthusiastic and engaging music. Featured on Clout, they have been described as having “…intensity, appeal and weird charisma…” Come with us as we jump into their intriguing music.

After spending the past year focusing on playing shows, Aubrey has released their debut single ‘Bad News’. Ironically, while ‘Bad News’ was released on Valentine’s Day, the band explain that “…we like to think of it as an anti-Valentines Day single.” Adopting a personal narrative, Amelia uses a conversational style to speak directly to that guy (or girl) who is “bad news”. Reminiscent of Alanis Morrissette, vocalist Amelia has an obscure lilt to her vocals inserting an oddness to the single; however, it is the obscurity that enhances her charismatic performance.

Along with the enticing vocal gymnastics, Aubrey touches on the emotions felt when dealing with a toxic relationship. Fury, rage and angst burst forth with the pounding drums, dynamic guitars and painful screams from Amelia. Interestingly enough, while the choruses allow us to shout and stamp our feet in anger, the movement to a soft, Radiohead-like sound touches your heart and ensnares your senses.

So, what is my overall opinion of Aubrey and ‘Bad News’? In a word: outstanding. This may be their debut single but I can tell Aubrey is set for stardom. A gem among sonic pebbles, Aubrey is one of the most interesting and captivating bands I have heard this year.
