Track of the Day: Athena Lim – White Dust (2024)
Igniting a passion for art at an early age, singer-songwriter Athena Lim began writing songs in her childhood – an act that would later emerge as a poetic musical connection with listeners. After deferring her acceptance to the Royal College of Art & Design, UK-based Lim chose to “pursue music aggressively” and embrace her natural talent in the musical arena. While the Canadian songstress has only a year of experience beneath her belt with limited releases, Lim’s music is sophisticated, elegant and sees her stand out as a talented newcomer.
Following her debut single ‘Being Someone’, ‘White Dust’ is Lim’s second release in 2024 and the second single off her upcoming debut EP (set for release in early summer). Shifting from moody melancholy and angst in ‘Being Someone’, ‘White Dust’ is upbeat, laidback and heart-warming. With bright-eyed enthusiasm, the toe-tapping single breathes life into vintage folk and pop with an indie-rock edginess. For me, Lim saunters from the 70s, 80s and 90s pop realms transcending distance, space, time and generations with her music.
Influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Parliament Funkadelic and Coldplay, Athena Lim has a diverse list of genres to blend into her unique sound. Produced by multi-instrumentalist James Atin-Godden, ‘White Dust’ sprinkles slips of Amy Winehouse caught in poetic Dylan-style songwriting with the innocence of dodie lingering in the obscure vocals. Haunting but simultaneously cheerful and comforting, ‘White Dust’ captures the core of Lim’s artistry – to find the mystical in the mundane.
“I am an ardent fan of magical realism in literature and the visual and cinematic arts… I aim to capture and process experiences by elevating them to the realm of the poetic. This is what music and all art allows us to do. I want to make the common inspiring and the mundane seem magical”. – Athena Lim
In addition to the single, Athena Lim released an official music video for ‘White Dust’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
