Track of the Day: Arden – Silence

Lying somewhere between John Mayer, Tom Odell, Charlie Puth and Shawn Mendes, singer-songwriter Arden is warm, rich and enchanting. I’m not particularly keen to compare artists to more established names, but it might be a good reference if you’re interested in Arden – and you totally should be!! With a sharp pop that meets hip-hop edginess atop mellow pop instrumentation, his music has an elegant eclecticism. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Silence’.

Following his single ‘Where I’ve Been’, ‘Silence’ is a slice of hip-hop, pop, folk-pop and rap all layered atop one another. Bouncing from a mellow, smooth, laidback sound to hard-hitting electropop then back to the soothing piano and guitar arrangement, it is safe to say that Arden has some diversity. In fact, the simple transition from one contemporary sound to the other shows Arden’s eclecticism and versatility.

Written, recorded and mixed by Elliot Meldrum, with mastering from Michael Hoelters, ‘Silence’ is the fifth instalment in a 10-part release. Complicated and unique in its melodic arrangement, the track is filled with surprises; however, it is not only the melody that makes it exciting but the lyrical content as well. The bold switches from melancholic to high-powered tribal grooves and back to melancholic aptly represent the complex theme – a young lad trying to make sense of reality. Interestingly enough, the richness of Arden makes the ride less chaotic with its warmth. It is like Arden is shielding you from the crazy melody with a warm, comforting hug.

Sincere, sentimental and reflective, ‘Silence’ exposes human fragility in its most vulnerable way. The thing is, while the track exudes a youthful innocence, the production is highly sophisticated with Arden showing maturity beyond his 19 years of age. I cannot wait for more from this talented musician.
