Track of the Day: Anna May – The Show (2024)

Pushing the boundaries of genre, well truthfully almost obliterating them, singer-songwriter Anna May finds inspiration in her eclectic sound. An obscure concoction of folk and jazz, May found the commonality in each’s calm, soothing tone, while simultaneously discovering the diversity, then pulverising it into a delectable style that is Anna May and no one else. If this is your introduction to Anna May, then we’re in the same boat; however, she has enchanted listeners and ensnared senses for several years. Her confident stage presence and powerful melodies have earned the attention of international audiences. So, we might be late to the party but better late than never.

Following her well-received single ‘Bad Conversations’, Anna May saunters into 2024 with the new track ‘The Show’. Leaning further toward old-school jazz than folk, the single brims with luxurious elegance. Yet, while there is a kaleidoscopic rush of music sinking into your soul, pulsating in your veins and ensnaring your brain, a barebones sensibility allows an oscillation between indulgence and starkness. May’s smooth vocals offer a jazz-inspired singing style while the essence of spoken-word “stream of consciousness” poetry lingers through the lyricism.

Proving that time stands still for no person and we should strike while the iron is hot, ‘The Show’ was penned during a Suzanna Vega concert in 2016. It is a case of creativity needing to be captured immediately as, according to Anna May, “…the lyrics came to me, and I simply could not wait a moment to write them….”

Spontaneity inspired ‘The Show’ but then again, it might be fate and pre-determined situations. Infusing this theme in the track, Anna May explores the duality of life in the powerful lyricism as much as the complex duality of the melody. May explains:

“‘The Show’ is an examination of the marriage between the mundane and spectacular elements of humanity, that very much live side by side. The song in essence is seeing what is before us and diving deeper into the layers, revelations and subtext that exists beneath the surface… I wanted ‘The Show’ to embrace the randomness and spontaneity of life, as well as the intention that fuels all that we do…”
