Track of the Day: Animal Souls – The Kids (2024)

Out of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen numerous talented bands and artists arise, and we have another fascinating feature: Animal Souls. Technically the brainchild of producer and bassist Michael Fisher – a veteran in the music industry with decades of experience – Animal Souls is a grouping of some of the best musicians in his native USA and beyond. Now, Fisher and his group are probably well-known to many audiences, but this is our introduction to the man and his bandmates. Join us as we delve headfirst into Animal Souls’ most recent single, ‘The Kids’.

Joining the diverse talents of Ava Wolsynuk (vocals), Preston Sawyer (electric guitar), Michael Fisher (bass and acoustic guitar), Dan Cripps (drums), and John Fultz (organ and mellotron), Animal Souls presents an eclectic swirl of sound pushing genres into unconventional waters. Fisher shares that “Animal Souls’ music is dictated solely by the song itself, not the genre…” distinguishing the group as anything but pedestrian; they feel the theme and express raw emotion in whichever style happens to work.

Produced by Michael Fisher with Pete Cordalis (engineering) and Greg Mindorff (mastering), ‘The Kids’ offers a strong classic rock vibe, but with a lilt of alternative rock lingering above a quick peck of folk-rock. Considering ‘The Kids’ was penned 35 years ago, it makes sense for Animal Souls to breathe life into vintage rock. Yet, as old-school as the single is, the melody proves the power of music to transcend time, distance and generations with absolute ease.

Melodically, ‘The Kids’ is an ageless blast of rock, but it is the timeless theme that adds weightiness to the track. Fisher explains:

“I’m not really sure what I was trying to say in ‘The Kids’. I wrote the song 35 years ago so the original meaning has faded somewhat. I think it evokes a sense of innocence that children begin life’s journey with. Over time we, the townfolk, learn to fear and mistrust, but the kids aren’t scared. They don’t run. They recognise the good in people, even scary-looking strangers.”
