The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Ange Lloyd – Walk With Me (2023)

A powerhouse vocalist with the authority of Shirley Bassey, singer-songwriter Ange Lloyd will send shivers down your arms with only a single note. This is my introduction to Lloyd, but she is already turning heads across the globe featuring on publications, radio stations, and even working with Tony Christie at Abbey Road Studios. Northern Soul author and aficionado Pete McKenna has described Lloyd as having “…the best voice and range I’ve heard in ages…”. While Lloyd stands up as a masterful vocalist having “added magic” to many recordings, such as ‘On the 24th’ by The Twang, ‘Exiled Love’ by Inego, and Paddy Considine’s ‘Riding The Low’, she also happens to be a trumpeter and keyboardist. Come with us as we delve into her new single ‘Walk With Me’.

Along with previous collaborations, UK-based Ange Lloyd lends her voice to the innovative cross-media project Certain. Certain “seeks to give a voice to new talent, crossing boundaries of age, race and genre stereotypes…smash open neat boxes to form creative hybrids and multi-media collaborations. Supporting communities and the fiercely talented artists within them…” Joining Wolverhampton-based artists Taylor Stylez, Connor Brooks and Amara Latchford, writing force Algar/Nicholas, and legendary producer Gavin Monaghan, Lloyd (and everyone else) brings The Certain Show to fruition.

Described by Brum Radio as “…a bona-fide soul classic”, Ange Lloyd’s ‘Walk With Me’ accompanies the launch of The Certain Show. In the style of old-school soul, Lloyd drags us back to the days of Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warrick and Gladys Knight, but as a completely stand-alone artist who can easily fall alongside these greats. In fact, I needed to double-check I was playing ‘Walk With Me’ and not something from the 1960s. Sending you adrift on a sonic river with a big comfortable cushion, you glide along with a grin on your face.

While the overwhelming vocals ooze passion, strength and tender warmth, the inclusion of her trumpets brings the old soul kick. Simplistic in its arrangement but kaleidoscopic in its delivery, Ange Lloyd proves that you don’t need tons of instruments to make a good song. All you need is heart, passion, and a decent pair of pipes – Ange Lloyd has it all.
