Track of the Day: Ali George – Little Prophecy

Described as “an absolute gem” by BBC Music Introducing and compared to Cat Stevens by American Pancake, Ali George is stirring the pot with his intriguing music across the globe. An established musician within the folk scene – he’s been performing for over 20 years – UK-based George has built a strong reputation with his gripping sound. In fact, his introduction to gigs came at age 11 with his first band Mental Lightning and he was performing acoustic solo gigs by age 16. Then came the albums, singles, features, and tons of interest in his music. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Little Prophecy’.

Following his single ‘Loverboy’, Ali George takes us back to old-school folk with the new single ‘Little Prophecy’. Inserting a mild blues tinge into his renowned folk sound, we can hear the desperation linked to the song’s concept – the pain of lost love. George explains that the song was inspired by Greek mythology where the song’s protagonist is “warned by an advisor that his lover has ulterior motives…and that trouble will ensue if he doesn’t leave her. He ignores this oracle’s warning, and the prophecy unfolds.”

As I mentioned, the indie-folk song is blues-laced with a toe-tapping sheen – it’s one of those songs where you can see the guy on the porch shaking his head at the protagonist’s stupidity. Moving from his traditional style, this bluesy guitar highlights George’s versatility; as well as his dynamic musicality.

Flowing with vulnerability, ‘Little Prophecy’ has a heart-breaking, tender and intensely, brutally honest desperation to it. In this single, George explores human fragility with sophisticated style. With Leonard Cohen’s breath-taking lyricism and Cat Stevens’s infectiousness, Ali George sends our souls soaring as he releases all the “pent-up, unresolved emotions” typically felt after a breakup.
