Track of the Day: Alex Lipinski – Idiot Station (2023)

Vying for the name of an “artists artist”, singer-songwriter Alex Lipinski has collaborated with Bonehead, performed as solo support for Marc Almond on his European tour, received glowing reviews from radio stations and publications, and can even count Liam Gallagher as part of his fanbase. He has engaged with audiences across the UK, entertained people from Glasgow to Brighton (and beyond) and has been described by The Lemonheads’ Evan Dando as “emotionally expansive, tough and pretty…honest and worth it!” With all of this plus a recent signing with Marquee Records, Lipinski is on the way up with his sophisticated songs and breathtaking charm.

Following his well-received single ‘Closing Time’, Alex Lipinski blasts into 2023 with his latest release ‘Idiot Station’. Stepping away from the indie-rock style reminiscent of Oasis at their best, ‘Idiot Station’ is bold and powerful with a toe-tapping alternative rock tone. If I were to compare Lipinski’s new song to anyone, it would probably lie somewhere between Kasabian and Kaiser Chiefs with a hint of The Fratellis; then again, Lipinski is rather unique finding a balance of vintage and contemporary rock in his music.

From the first to the last chord, ‘Idiot Station’ pounds about your brain with the dynamic guitars and hard-hitting drums. Add Lipinski’s warm, rich vocals to the track and you have a mellifluous, soothing but gruff single. Produced by “desk-wizard” Michael Smith, who happens to have Wolf Alice and Elvis Costello in his client list, ‘Idiot Station’ has an elegant sophistication to the arrangement. Yet, as with most elements in the track, there is a lilt at both sides of the coin as ‘Idiot Station’ is harmonic but vulnerable, raw and gritty.

Slithering through your ear, rattling about your cranium, sending shivers down your body and leaving you gasping for breath, Alex Lipinski intoxicates listeners with his new single ‘Idiot Station’.
