Track of the Day: Agent Envy – No Friend
Taking us back 20 years to the sounds of 2000s rock, metal and industrial records, US-based singer-songwriter Agent Envy has a heavy, hard-hitting and nostalgic style. This is my introduction to Agent Envy, but she is already turning heads across the globe with coverage from international publications like A&R Factory, Less Than 1000 Followers and Girl Underground Music (to name but a few). The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘No Friend’.
From her debut single ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’, released in 2020, Agent Envy blasted onto the scene with her eclectic, obscure and dark music. Since ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’, she has shown versatility in her sound introducing a harder, more intense intimacy to her releases. ‘No Friend’ follows ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ and is the first single released in 2022; it is also evidence of her evolution as an artist. Bringing together the darkness of her early work melded with the hard, blunt metal sound of ‘Heart-Shaped Box’, ‘No Friend’ sees Agent Envy boldly stepping out of her melodic metal sphere.
Carving a niche for herself in the independent music scene, Agent Envy brings a contemporary flair to retro rock meets metal music. In ‘No Friend’ she travels along a powerful combination of dynamic guitars and pounding drums. Skipping along this hard-hitting foundation, her sultry vocals soar from belted highs to sensual lows – a rollercoaster of vocals against a raw instrumental arrangement.
When I first played ‘No Friend’, I was taken back to the 90s/early 2000s as tinges of The Cranberries linger within an Evanescence melody with a veil of Deftones laid atop the song. While the melody is outstanding, it is Agent Envy’s vocals melded with impressive guitar solos that make ‘No Friend’ memorable. Moreover, the enchanting music seems to ensnare your senses but retains a compelling theme in the mellifluous track as Agent Envy says “enough is enough” in her poignant lyricism.
A song that hits you between the eyes but simultaneously carries you adrift in a sonic bubble, Agent Envy astounds me with her new single ‘No Friend’.
