Track of the Day: Abz Winter – Red Flags (2023)

At only 20 years of age, Abz Winter has established herself as a leader in the UK music scene. Her powerful pop-rock melodies with rich vocals make her a stand-out artist – I mean, she has won the title ‘Over 18’s Winner for Undiscovered Talent UK 2021’, as well as many others. Her accolades include nominations for ‘Best New Female’ for Radio Wigwam, ‘Best Pop Act’ for the Birmingham Music Awards, and winner of ‘Best New Artist In Coventry’ by BBC Introducing. It is her charm and overwhelming presence that not only won awards but received numerous features online and on radio stations making her a name on an international scale.

With the aim of hearing a room of people singing her songs as she performs, Abz Winter has high expectations. However, considering her no-nonsense attitude, confidence and fantastic music, this dream will soon be a reality. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Red Flags’.

Following her single, ‘It’s Not Your Movie’, ‘Red Flags’ is Winter’s first release of 2023 and what a blast into the new year. With a slight reminiscence to Avril Lavigne, there is a hard-hitting pop-rock tone to ‘Red Flags’. Interestingly enough, while the old-school Lavigne meets Paramore’s pop-punk hype, Winter’s infectious single has a certain distinction. While she has traditional pop-punk elements in her music, her vocals have an obscurity that will soon create a sound that is utterly Abz Winter.

Bold, rich and fantastically mind-blowing, ‘Red Flags’ is one of those songs you jump about to and scream yourself hoarse. Twirling about in a kaleidoscopic haze, the melody tosses you from pillar to post in a pop-rock chaos; however, there appears to be a sense of soothing underlying the single as Winter carries you along the vibrant tune.

Touching on toxic relationships, ‘Red Flags “is written about being in a relationship with narcissistic tendencies. Even though all the signals are apparent until you piece them together, you can’t move on, but once you realise you get the hell out!” The frantic chaotic creativity and high-paced madness of ‘Red Flags’ so elegantly captures the emotional concept expressing the panic, frightful realisation and, well, a need to “get the hell out”.
