Torpey – This Old Road (2023)

Despite having only two singles beneath his belt, including the track we are about to review, singer-songwriter Torpey appears to be new on the scene; however, he is a gem within a sonic pool of pebbles. In an interview with RGM, the Irish artist shared that “my mam is a professional singer and musician, so it was a no-brainer for me once I started playing and writing…I’ve always been surrounded by music growing up…” At age four he began playing the piano and mid-teens he picked up a guitar and began writing. Now, his music is reaching the ears of audiences on an international scale featuring on global publications and playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘This Old Road’.

Following his well-received debut song ‘Why Won’t The World Stop Turning?’, ‘This Old Road’ is a mellifluous fusion of folk and pop. In the same interview with RGM, Torpey noted Ed Sheeran as an influence, and this is clearly evident in ‘This Old Road’. Combining an acoustic guitar with twinkling piano, a subtle banjo, and percussion lingering in the background, the single has an organic beauty about it. Yet, while a raw starkness creeps through the arrangement, ‘This Old Road’ is surprisingly kaleidoscopic. Moreover, the single has a bare-bones quality but simultaneously an intricate complexity lurks in the melody and lyricism.

Tapping into his inner Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney, Torpey weaves an intimate tale from personal thoughts in this moving melody. Conceptual and philosophical, the poetic lyricism touches on life’s changes that are “often only noticeable in retrospect rather than in the moment…ranging from a wistful longing for a return to simplicity and innocence to a more nihilistic acceptance of mortality.”

Sincere, sentimental and reflective, Torpey explores humanity at its core in the single ‘This Old Road’.
