Tony Benn – If We Make It Through The Winter (2021)

For almost two decades Irish folk artist Tony Benn has been sharing his music with the masses. His previous experience with grunge group Exploding Marmalades earned some recognition featuring on the Irish Top 30, but now he’s a professional solo act. With nothing but his guitar, Benn has travelled across the US, Europe and mostly Ireland – the musician’s dream, eh? Known for his rich baritone, engaging lyricism and moving melodies, Benn has received international critical acclaim from blogs like Gig Soup; as well as getting airtime on several online radios. We would like to introduce you to his sound with his single ‘If We Make It Through The Winter’.

Following his album If I Cross Your Mind, ‘If We Make Through The Winter’ is an intimate, endearing and tender track. With the intensity of Joni Mitchell and songwriting prowess of Bob Dylan, the track is a soundscape for the heartbroken. Yet, while there is a melancholic quality to the single, the witty lyricism adds deeper sincerity to the concept of “hard times coming”. Yes, the lyricism does focus on upcoming weariness, but the heartwrenching vocals insert whimsical nostalgia showing a depth of content and innovative songwriting.

Indeed, the lyrical content is compelling but it is not the words that make ‘If We Make It Through The Winter’ evocative. Using a stripped-back, acoustic-inspired combination of moving instrumentation and rich vocals, Benn places one in a whirlpool of music. As the melody dips, so do your spirits before soaring with the impressive crescendo making the chorus very catchy. What I find particularly intriguing is Benn’s rich vocals that easily captivate one. Showcasing his ability to transition from bold prominence to a hushed backing, Ben adds a sentimentality and raw honesty to ‘If We Make It Through The Winter’.
